Remember that time…

Remember that time I said I would fill you in more on what I’m doing here and why it’s paradise? Well I was obviously too busy living in my paradise to be writing about it! Apologies all around. I’m getting back on the blogging train though, so stay tuned for more details and photos (yes! photos! finally!).

Until then, here’s what I’m listening to right now…I think it sums up my attitude pretty well.

My own personal paradise

Everyone who knows me well knows how much I absolutely LOVE hot weather. It makes me feel alive. Sunshine, wearing dresses, reading outside for hours, napping in hammocks…that’s my happy place. Anywhere near the equator can fill those basic requirements for happiness. But paradise? That takes something more.

Right now, in this moment, I am living in my own personal paradise.

Clinica Esperanza

Roatan medical care

When I first arrived in Roatan, Honduras, I stopped by the Clinica Esperanza in Sandy Bay. My friend, Kelly, is working there and I wanted to check out their program. It is AMAZING what they do on a daily basis. There are two other main hospitals on the island, one public (very limited resources) and one private (very expensive consults and treatment). Clinica Esperanza is a private licensed hospital but they offer affordable consults and all prescribed meds are free! The clinic sometimes even pays for transport to and treatments on the mainland that they aren’t able to provide here in Roatan.

Traveling hiatus!

While this blog was meant to track my travels, obviously I haven’t gone very far! After arriving in Roatan on November 10th, I’m still here with no plans to leave. The point of this trip was to find a place where I wanted to live and work, so here I am – I just lucked out finding a place right away. I’ll be here until Christmas (ish), stateside for the holidays, and then back here for however long I want to stay. And all I can do is smile. Life is so beautiful <3

Updates to come: volunteering, working, and living on the island. Sorry for the long gap between posts, I’ll try to be better from now on!

A comedy of errors

The start to my trip was a series of small issues that I figured you would all enjoy. So I got to Logan early to check my bag because I bring my Swiss army knife with me everywhere, and while I have been allowed on 7 (yes, SEVEN) flights without security noticing it in my purse I decided not to risk it and just check the bag. The copilot on my flight was late because his bus broke down on the highway. We waited for him, and then when we pulled away from the gate we had to de-ice the plane because Boston is part of the frigid arctic tundra and these things happen. We finally left an hour and fifteen minutes late. You would think I would’ve been nervous about missing my connection in Miami, but no. I just slept the whole time instead.

Packing and what not

I’ve had so many people ask me how I can pack for a 6-week trip, so here’s the breakdown…

First and foremost, figure out the difference between want and need. Pack what you think you need, and then unpack it and take things out. That shirt that looks cute with that one pair of jeans you have that you think you’ll wear out at night? Yeah, pull that out. You can wear the other shirt that you wore last night because nobody actually remembers what you were wearing nor do they care that you’re wearing it again. Seriously. It’s true. Ask someone what you wore yesterday and see if they remember.

Ok it’s actually crunch time now…I leave in a week! It’s been a long time coming and I am SO excited to finally head out. While I don’t have any set itinerary or anything, I do know I’m landing in San Pedro Sula next Thursday. And I’m leaving from Guatemala City on December 20th. That’s it. Nada mas. Everything in between is up in the air!

‘Cause I love that dirty water

Oh, Boston, you’re my home. (Good luck getting that song out of your head now…)

I’ve been in MA since August, living the retired life and loving it! Amy and Andrew got married last week so it’s finally time to start planning my next trip.

Lindsey Rae Photography

Tickets are already bought for November and December…Honduras and Guatemala here I come! I won’t have a computer with me while traveling, but I’ll try to update you all whenever I can. Over the next few weeks I’ll be researching travel insurance, ground transportation, and possible places to check out. And of course I’ll be staying up on the latest news for the whole region, so ease up on the worrying, kiddos.

Feel free to send me suggestions…places to go, people to meet, things to do, whatever you’ve got!
