Roatan Fundraiser for Medical Care

Something that never ceases to amaze me about the community of Roatan is their constant efforts to better the whole island. Coming up next in the year-long line-up of fundraising events on Roatan is the annual Sundae by the Sea, scheduled for Sunday, October 4th, at Caribe Tesoro in West Bay. Sundae by the Sea is an annual event benefitting Clinica Esperanza, one of Roatan’s most important medical facilities.

All about Clinica Esperanza

Nurse Peggy Stranges moved to Roatan in 2001, and within a short time she began offering basic medical services to her neighbors in need right in her own home. Clínica Esperanza started at her kitchen table, expanding over the years to become the amazing clinic it is today.

Clinica Esperanza – or Ms. Peggy’s Clinic – treats more than a hundred patients on a daily basis. Lines out the door are a common sight at the clinic, starting early in the morning and continuing late into the afternoon and evening. A large full-time staff plus a constant rotation of volunteer doctors and nurses helps to handle the endless flow of needs to be addressed, but the most constant need is financial support.

Roatan Medical Services

Clinica Esperanza provides low-cost and no-cost medical care to the people of Roatan. Whether you can afford services or not, no patient is turned away. In addition to the general walk-in clinic, Clinica Esperanza also hosts a women’s health center, a pediatric inpatient hospital, and both adult and pediatric dental clinics with support from a laboratory and a pharmacy. The clinic also provides outreach clinics and community health education programs. They estimate they have served over 50,000 patients at the clinic thus far.

All of these programs and initiatives cost money. The medications and medical supplies to keep the clinic operating cost money. The staff and basic administrative activities of the clinic cost money. The success of this facility is reliant upon the donations of visitors and volunteers who understand the need for quality medical care in Roatan.

If you will be in Roatan the weekend of October 4th, I encourage you to attend Sundae by the Sea in person to see the supportive nature of this island community first-hand. If you cannot attend in person, the online auction might entice you to book your next vacation right away!

Each year, various businesses donate things like resort stays, restaurant gift certificates, diving, fishing charters, spa certificates, etc., which can all be bid on, with all proceeds going to Clinica Esperanza.

Sundae by the Sea will be held on October 4th at Caribe Tesoro in West Bay from 1-5pm. Tickets are available at Clinica Esperanza, Waves of Art Gallery, JavaVine, Bulk Gourmet, and Nidia’s Party Spot. Tickets include entry to the event, a great assortment of food, tickets for beverages, and live music, all for $30 in advance or $35 at the door; kids are half-price. At the event, there is a silent auction plus a live auction.

Whether you are on-island or not, you can also participate in the online auction. Check out www.roatanauctions.com to see some of the amazing prizes up for grabs, and make sure to keep checking back as the event date gets closer and more prizes are added!
