Being Present and Feeling Grateful

Date Posted: August 3, 2017

There’s a magic to living by the sea. I knew it when we lived in Roatan, but I don’t think I fully appreciated it. Despite my constant raving about expat life on the island and encouraging everyone and their mother to live wherever makes them happy, I look back now and wonder if I was truly present and appreciative of the extraordinary circumstances of our life there.

owning a rental home in Roatan

My very first article for International Living magazine covered a Canadian snowbird couple who rented out the other half of their duplex year-round. Spoiler alert: we rented from them! Owning a rental home in Roatan can be a fantastic way to being living your island dream before you fully retire.

Island Life is for the Directionally-Challenged

I posted this piece on Women Who Live on Rocks last year, and it recently popped up again to make me smile. Island life is full of quirks, giving road directions is merely one tiny example of the fun you can have trying to make sense of living on a small rock in the sea.

Roatan charity

As we like to do in Roatan, it’s time for another fundraising event! But this one comes with a whopper of a benefit to you if you win: a week stay in Roatan at one of three different vacation rental properties! Just imagine: you win this raffle and get to take a week off during the worst of the winter to head to paradise and spend your days on the beach instead. Sounds fabulous, doesn’t it?

Recently, my Irish-Colombian and I took advantage of a gift certificate we won back when we attended the Roatan Humane Society’s Fur Ball Fundraiser. Our raffle prize was a two-night stay at the lovely West Bay Lodge, complete with breakfast each day and a 5-course lobster dinner one night! A weekend in West Bay isn’t a distant getaway for us, but it was really fun to feel like a tourist in our own backyard. Here are some of the highlights from our staycation in West Bay Roatan.

Island Advice: Avoid the Potholes

Date Posted: February 3, 2015
Posted in: All About Roatan

I had a bit of a scare today. I was driving my scooter on a bright, sunny day, heading off to a series of meetings and fun events for the rest of the afternoon. Unfortunately, while I had planned ahead for those activities, I hadn’t planned on hitting a ginormous pothole in the road and crashing my scooter.

Clearly since I’m writing this, I am okay.

One of the really amazing things to come from this blog (other than getting involved with International Living Magazine and meeting some really cool people) was being contacted by House Hunters International to do an episode. We filmed a loooooong time ago, but it’s finally airing soon!
