expats explore their new homes

It’s time for another Day in the Life on Roatan! And this is a good one, guys, so get ready…

I woke up to the sunshine and birds around 6am, managed to open my sleepy eyes and get up to take Lina for a walk through the neighborhood shortly thereafter. We stopped to chat with Diego and our furry friend on the hill – I think I’ll name him Don Juan. He’s adorable and Lina likes him, even though he tries to kiss her through the fence all the time.

Amanda Walkins

I awoke this morning to a slight breeze, which was welcome relief after the stagnant heat yesterday. The temperatures were reading 105 F and the air was stifling. Unfortunately, it’s that time of year when they burn all the cane fields (and who knows what else) on the mainland, leaving a thick haze to hover over us for days on end. It makes the sunsets brilliantly bright red, but the days are heavy. This morning’s breeze offered a small respite.

Roatan rescue dog

Every dog loves a morning walk through the neighborhood, right? Well mine is a little bit lazy, but she still enjoys a short mosey at snail’s pace. The best part about a slow mosey is that you don’t miss anything…not the sweet scent of springtime flowers, not the scurrying little lizards trying to camouflage themselves, not the dainty butterflies fluttering around. And of course, a slow mosey also allows plenty of time to cavort with your neighborhood friends!

My Island Life Is Not Normal

I’m sitting here thinking about a new blog post to write, thinking, ‘There’s nothing else to write about!’ And then I look around and remember that my life is not what most people would consider “normal.”

I’m on the balcony of a third story building at the top of a hill overlooking the western tip of a gorgeous Caribbean Island. I’m sitting among palm tree tops and overlooking the aquas and blues of the Caribbean Sea.

Operation Gecko Rescue

Date Posted: February 21, 2015

We woke up this morning to find Lina had gotten sick in the middle of the night (poor thing). The Irish-Colombian took a closer look to see if she’d snuck any bones or trash off the beach, but instead of chicken bones he found a baby gecko. We were both horrified! How the hell did lazy Lina manage to catch and eat a gecko?!

Then it moved!
