When the sun has set over the Firth of Forth and darkness has descended upon Calton Hill, the excitement is palpable. Torches blaze – the fire crackling in the cold evening air. Performers amble about the hill in full costume, covered in body paint and intricately crafted dress to reflect their roles as elements and forces of nature.

Invisible Edinburgh tours of the city centre

By far one of the most interesting and admirable projects I’ve come across lately has to be Invisible Edinburgh. This social enterprise (read: What is a Social Enterprise and How Can I Get Involved?) offers training to individuals coming from homelessness so they can become walking tour guides. Taking the Invisible Edinburgh Powerful Women tour was a truly enlightening experience for this new expat in Edinburgh.

The Treehouse Cafe in Edinburgh

So we’ve officially moved into Edinburgh! I’m sure you’re as excited as we are to learn more about this beautiful city and its very eclectic inhabitants. Part of moving into a new home is, of course, exploring your surroundings. We’ve been out and about, wandering and popping into various shops and eateries to check out the best of our new expat home (okay, so I’m the only technical expat here since my Irish-Colombian grew up in Scotland, but he’s never lived in Edinburgh).
