Operation Gecko Rescue

Date Posted: February 21, 2015
Posted in: All About Roatan

We woke up this morning to find Lina had gotten sick in the middle of the night (poor thing). The Irish-Colombian took a closer look to see if she’d snuck any bones or trash off the beach, but instead of chicken bones he found a baby gecko. We were both horrified! How the hell did lazy Lina manage to catch and eat a gecko?!

Then it moved!

Sunset in Half Moon Bay Roatan

I’m realizing there’s a trend happening here. In no uncertain terms, Roatan is trying to kill me. Here’s my evidence so far…

Example 1: I got a staph infection. While fairly common especially in tropical areas, staph is basically just horrible. If you’ve never had it, congratulations. If you have, you feel my pain. It’s a bacterial infection in your skin that causes incredible pain and suffering. I had it on my face…UGH.

But I survived!

Unfortunately, while I had planned ahead for those activities, I hadn’t planned on hitting a ginormous pothole in the road and crashing my scooter.

Clearly since I’m writing this, I am okay.

Lessons are learned every day – or at least they should be. Whether positive or negative, life is full of daily experiences that change us and affect us. Living on an island in the Caribbean for two years has taught me many valuable lessons I may not have learned living Stateside. In case you aren’t currently basking in tropical sunshine like me, allow me to impart some of my newfound wisdom.

Roatan expat Amanda Walkins

My most popular post is “How much does it cost to live in Roatan” from 2013 where I explained our basic expenses to offer a general idea. While our expenses haven’t drastically changed, there are still plenty of updates I can now provide a year later for any of you considering moving here soon. These costs per month are for our household (2 adults), and we share expenses equally.
