Buy Locally in Roatan

where to shop in Roatan

I am a huge proponent of supporting local businesses, especially when I travel. It may be harder and harder to avoid the international chain stores and eateries altogether, but we always have the choice to not buy from them. Buy from local artisans, eat at locally-owned restaurants, and support the community you’re visiting. These local operations are what makes a place unique.

A Weekend in West Bay Roatan

Recently, my Irish-Colombian and I took advantage of a gift certificate we won back when we attended the Roatan Humane Society’s Fur Ball Fundraiser. Our raffle prize was a two-night stay at the lovely West Bay Lodge, complete with breakfast each day and a 5-course lobster dinner one night! A weekend in West Bay isn’t a distant getaway for us, but it was really fun to feel like a tourist in our own backyard. Here are some of the highlights from our staycation in West Bay Roatan.

RoatanMusic

There is always something that can bring you back to a moment in time; something that triggers a memory and puts you far from where you are currently. It might be a smell or a certain taste, but for many people it’s music.

Hey guess what? In typical Amanda fashion I’m currently working on a multitude of projects! All super fun things, don’t worry 🙂

One of them is helping manage the next Extreme Roatan event scheduled for Saturday, April 4th. If you’re unfamiliar with Tough Mudders and Spartan Races, you clearly haven’t been living in the U.S. for the past several years. And that’s okay!

Roatan best dive sites

The best dives sites in Roatan is – of course – a subjective list. Some divers love wrecks, others prefer shallow dives with lots of light and color. Some divers seek out little critters in the sand while others prefer drifting along a wall looking for big stuff in the deep. But for those of us who live and breathe (bubbles) in Roatan, these are the best dive sites around.

A Sunny Day at Pigeon Cay, Plus a PSA (Phytophotodermatitis…What’s that you say?)

Remember when I was super excited about it being slow season, offering us a much-deserved opportunity to actually see this beautiful island we call home? Welp, turns out I still couldn’t really figure out how to take time away from work. So many lessons learned.

However, I do have awesome friends here on this island, and they managed to check at least one thing off that little list of mine. In honor of the lovely Sarah hosting her brother and his girlfriend for a week of scuba diving bliss, and courtesy of the incredibly well-connected and creative Nick and Caroline, we managed to get an amazing deal on a day-trip out to Pigeon Cay.

The only map I could find with Pigeon Cay even mentioned...it's that small!
