Roatan island mosquitoes

People often ask me if they should take anti-malarial medication while visiting Roatan. While Dengue Fever and Malaria can be contracted here, both are quite rare. I did have Dengue Fever last year, which was caused by these “turdwad” mosquitoes (watch the video). I had been here for two years when I got it, so I’m going to venture to say those of you visiting for a week have an unbelievably low chance of getting either disease.

Sunset in Half Moon Bay Roatan

I’m realizing there’s a trend happening here. In no uncertain terms, Roatan is trying to kill me. Here’s my evidence so far…

Example 1: I got a staph infection. While fairly common especially in tropical areas, staph is basically just horrible. If you’ve never had it, congratulations. If you have, you feel my pain. It’s a bacterial infection in your skin that causes incredible pain and suffering. I had it on my face…UGH.

Remember when I was super excited about it being slow season, offering us a much-deserved opportunity to actually see this beautiful island we call home? Welp, turns out I still couldn’t really figure out how to take time away from work. So many lessons learned.

However, I do have awesome friends here on this island, and they managed to check at least one thing off that little list of mine. In honor of the lovely Sarah hosting her brother and his girlfriend for a week of scuba diving bliss, and courtesy of the incredibly well-connected and creative Nick and Caroline, we managed to get an amazing deal on a day-trip out to Pigeon Cay.

The only map I could find with Pigeon Cay even mentioned...it's that small!

Dengue fever in Roatan

Sorry to be so MIA lately – lots has happened! Here’s the quick rundown…

We went off-island for 7 weeks. SEVEN weeks! It was filled with travels and visits with family and friends and endless fun. We spent two weeks in Boston with my family, two weeks in Scotland with his; we went to London for a week and Portugal for ten days. Add in a few days for travel and – poof! – seven weeks. We ate too much, drank too much, and laughed until our bellies ached. It was perfect.
