The Isle of Arran in Scotland is frequently called Scotland in Miniature, and for good reason. This tiny island boasts everything the mainland has, from ancient standing stones and beautiful castles to whisky distilleries, beaches, and highlands. As my first Scottish island, visiting the Isle of Arran has officially set the bar very high for all others to come!

Spending a weekend in Portland Maine by the sea

I recently spent a weekend in Portland Maine around the Women in Travel Summit (WITS) travel conference. It was actually my very first visit to Portland! Shockingly, I grew up just down the road in Massachusetts and had spent years visiting Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. But, in all that time, I never stopped into Portland.

Day trips from Edinburgh can be easily arranged so you can explore beyond the city. While there is ample to do in Edinburgh itself, getting outside the city can show you more of Scotland from different angles.

For some Edinburgh day trip ideas, I pulled together my favorite days out that we’ve done in the years we’ve lived here. There are probably plenty more to do, too! But, so far, these seven are my favorites.

Coast to coast in Costa Rica along the golden sand beaches lined with palm trees

A while back, I went coast to coast in Costa Rica on a fabulous vacation with my fantastic cousin. She visited me in Ecuador and in Honduras (3 times!), and she initiated the planning of this outstanding Costa Rica trip. I’ve also just coaxed her into a visit to Scotland! That’s what brought up all these fun memories of trips past.

Women in Travel Summit WITS logo

I recently spent a week in Portland, Maine, at the Women in Travel Summit (WITS) travel conference. To say I felt right at home would be a complete understatement! Joining together with several hundred fellow travel addicts for multiple days of inclusive seminars was a breath of fresh air I didn’t even realize I needed.

The Rabbie’s tour of St Andrews and Fife is a fantastic day trip from Edinburgh. If you’re visiting Scotland and basing much of your time in the capital city, you can easily take day trips from Edinburgh to many interesting locations.

While public transportation is readily available and accessible, sometimes it just doesn’t quite get you where you want to go. For those places, it’s worthwhile taking a tour.
