Noahs Ark Dog Sanctuary in Malta - volunteer to walk dogs

One of the most important parts of becoming an expat is getting involved in your new local community. It’s why I talked about the coastal cleanup and World Oceans Day earlier this year. It’s also why I volunteered with the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home back in Scotland. And it’s what brought us to Noah’s Ark Dog Sanctuary in Malta.

Being Present and Feeling Grateful

Date Posted: August 3, 2017

Living by the sea makes you stop and just be in the present moment. Having been an expat in many places, the sea is always the most welcoming and where I feel most grateful.

There’s a magic to living by the sea. I knew it when we lived in Roatan, but I don’t think I fully appreciated it. Despite my constant raving about expat life on the island and encouraging everyone and their mother to live wherever makes them happy, I look back now and wonder if I was truly present and appreciative of the extraordinary circumstances of our life there.

Daily Life as an Expat in Malta - Walking Around Qawra

The area of Malta that we live in is called St. Paul’s Bay. It’s in the northern part of the island of Malta and is a more recently developed area, being primarily built up in the 1960s and later.

Part of this area is called Bugibba, which is the area we live in specifically. Alongside Bugibba is an area called Qawra, which is one of my favorite areas nearby for a run or a Sunday walk.

Come take a stroll with us and see why we love walking around Qawra!

Day Trip to the Island of Gozo

Advice for a day trip to Gozo from Malta

Did you know that Malta is an independent nation consisting of three main islands in the Mediterranean? We live on the island of Malta, which is the largest. The island of Gozo is second-largest and less densely populated. The island of Comino is non-residential. Both Gozo and Comino are easily accessible from Malta and, actually, my Irish-Colombian frequently dives at both islands! A day trip to the island of Gozo is a great addition to a holiday in Malta.

Volunteer to join your community coastal cleanup

Recently, I joined a diverse group of people coming together for a common cause: I was a volunteer for a coastal cleanup in Malta. A coastal cleanup is a fantastic activity to do wherever you are in the world. There were many in Roatan, but I was never able to take part because of work or other commitments. This time around, I offer no excuses.

new expat in Malta first impressions

We’ve been expats several times before, both in each other’s countries and beyond. We’ve traveled extensively between our single lives and now together. So I feel like we have a fairly decent base by which we can compare our lives as new expats in Malta with other potential expat homes. Our first impressions of Malta have been really positive for several reasons. Here’s a quick rundown of our reactions to our first few weeks here in Malta.

serial expat life

I told you we’re heading somewhere new soon…so here’s a hint of what’s to come! We’ll see if you can guess where our next plane will land based on some facts about our new potential expat home. Hint #1: we would both definitely be called expats there! Neither of us has any connection to this next spot. In fact, I’ve never even visited before.
