Island life as an expat - comparing Roatan and Malta

Best expat destinations is a common term I see floating around online all the time. I’ll be honest from the onset here: there is no way I could say any place on Earth is the best!

That’s because your opinion will undoubtedly differ from mine. And that’s what makes moving to new places and traveling such an important part of life.

Being Present and Feeling Grateful

Living by the sea makes you stop and just be in the present moment. Having been an expat in many places, the sea is always the most welcoming and where I feel most grateful.

There’s a magic to living by the sea. I knew it when we lived in Roatan, but I don’t think I fully appreciated it. Despite my constant raving about expat life on the island and encouraging everyone and their mother to live wherever makes them happy, I look back now and wonder if I was truly present and appreciative of the extraordinary circumstances of our life there.

owning a rental home in Roatan

My very first article for International Living magazine covered a Canadian snowbird couple who rented out the other half of their duplex year-round. Spoiler alert: we rented from them! Owning a rental home in Roatan can be a fantastic way to being living your island dream before you fully retire.

From Women Who Live on Rocks

I posted this piece on Women Who Live on Rocks last year, and it recently popped up again to make me smile. Island life is full of quirks, giving road directions is merely one tiny example of the fun you can have trying to make sense of living on a small rock in the sea.

International Charity Day for Expats

Today is International Charity Day, as established by the United Nations in 2013 in honor of Mother Teresa. I’ve already discussed how expats tend to get involved in their local communities around the world, but perhaps it’s time to revisit the topic. Charity is important everywhere, but getting involved has several specific benefits for expats in particular.

Roatan House Hunters International

This week marks my three year anniversary of a new life. It’s been three years since I arrived in Roatan, Honduras. It’s been three years since I met my Irish-Colombian on West Bay Beach. It’s been three years since we moved in together. It’s been three years since we went to the gas station and came home with a little furball. All that happened in just over a week! It’s been three years of life well lived, love fearlessly shared, and so many incredible adventures. Here’s to looking back and to moving forward.

Blue Bahia Roatan Resort

Expats choose their new homes based on a variety of factors. Those in Roatan say they love the laidback lifestyle, the stunning tropical scenery, and – of course – the weather. Fleeing winter up north is a common refrain for expats on this Caribbean island, including today’s highlighted expat.
