Noahs Ark Dog Sanctuary in Malta - volunteer to walk dogs

One of the most important parts of becoming an expat is getting involved in your new local community. It’s why I talked about the coastal cleanup and World Oceans Day earlier this year. It’s also why I volunteered with the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home back in Scotland. And it’s what brought us to Noah’s Ark Dog Sanctuary in Malta.

International Charity Day for Expats

Today is International Charity Day, as established by the United Nations in 2013 in honor of Mother Teresa. I’ve already discussed how expats tend to get involved in their local communities around the world, but perhaps it’s time to revisit the topic. Charity is important everywhere, but getting involved has several specific benefits for expats in particular.

Roatan fundraiser

Roatan residents are incredibly community-oriented, ensuring that new transplants to the island are welcomed and that neighbors are supported for the greater good. You can see from the number of posts I’ve done on fundraising events and community gatherings that this isn’t a one-off annual charity event kind of place. Roatan is filled with people doing good all year long.

Traveling ignites something in the soul – there’s no denying that. Every new experience, every new place explored, and every cultural barrier knocked down brings about a change in our perspectives and in the very way we live our lives.

Travel inspires us to do more and to be more. Travel unites us.

As we like to do in Roatan, it’s time for another fundraising event! But this one comes with a whopper of a benefit to you if you win: a week stay in Roatan at one of three different vacation rental properties! Just imagine: you win this raffle and get to take a week off during the worst of the winter to head to paradise and spend your days on the beach instead. Sounds fabulous, doesn’t it?

Roatan Fundraiser for Medical Care

Something that never ceases to amaze me about the community of Roatan is their constant efforts to better the whole island. Coming up next in the year-long line-up of fundraising events on Roatan is the annual Sundae by the Sea, scheduled for Sunday, October 4th, at Caribe Tesoro in West Bay. Sundae by the Sea is an annual event benefitting Clinica Esperanza, one of Roatan’s most important medical facilities.

SOL Foundation

After nearly a month of competitions and fundraisers, the 8th Annual Golden Buoy Dive Shop Olympics is coming up to its final event. This Saturday, June 6th, head over to Bananarama in West Bay to witness – or participate in – the most grueling evening of activities yet. The Dive Shop Olympics culminate in a pentathlon of events to push each dive shop to their physical and emotional limits. (Guys, that’s a joke. There’s nothing physically grueling here, just some good old fashioned fun!)
