Enjoy History at the In Guardia Parade in Valletta

If you haven’t yet noticed, I’m a bit of a history nerd. It’s inherited – my dad’s favorite line to say is: “Did you know…” followed by a fact or story of interest. I’ve taken on that tendency, but you can’t keep saying, “Did you know?” without following it up with interesting facts! And so, off we went to check out living history at the In Guardia Parade in Valletta so I could add to my random fact arsenal.

On the other side of the Grand Harbour from Valletta, you’ll find an area called the Three Cities. Their history goes back to Phoenician times – the area has always been a popular maritime community. But even if you’re not a history buff, at least make a quick visit to the Three Cities in Malta to explore the meticulously kept traditional neighborhoods and to marvel at the superyachts gracing the marina.

Day Trip to the Island of Gozo

Did you know that Malta is an independent nation consisting of three main islands in the Mediterranean? We live on the island of Malta, which is the largest. The island of Gozo is second-largest and less densely populated. The island of Comino is non-residential. Both Gozo and Comino are easily accessible from Malta and, actually, my Irish-Colombian frequently dives at both islands! A day trip to the island of Gozo is a great addition to a holiday in Malta.

The Annual Mdina Medieval Festival in Malta

Posted in: Malta Expat, Travel Tales

My favorite part of moving to a new expat home is exploring and learning about my new host country. One of the first things I do is check out upcoming calendars for festivals, annual events, and anything else noteworthy so I can try to catch them all. The first one that popped up for our new home in Malta was the Mdina Medieval Festival. While I may not be the type to don centuries-old garb and act a part, I can certainly appreciate the revelry and importance of these traditions!

Southern France…it just sings of romance and beauty. Rolling hills covered with small vineyards, private yachts and fabulous beaches hugging the Mediterranean coast, tiny villages with traditional stone architecture and colorful wooden shutters on every window. Southern France is dreamy even in reality. And that’s why I leapt at the opportunity for housesitting in Southern France last month.

In the wake of an election season that has rocked the entire world, unity has never been more important. We need to find ways to support each other – not rip each other apart. We need to offer solidarity – not division. We need to celebrate our wonderful differences and recognize the similarities we share with each other.

A quick visit to Pitlochry over the summer left us wanting to see more – and we also noticed promotional materials for The Enchanted Forest. If you know me at all, you know sparkly lights get me every time. Fill a forest with them and play magical music, I simply can’t resist. The Enchanted Forest in Pitlochry was calling my name.
